Sermon Discussion

Chesterton said gratitude is “the mother of all virtues.” In what ways do you see gratitude shaping — or failing to shape — your own character?

In Luke 17, all ten lepers were healed, but only one returned. What keeps people (including us) from practicing expressed gratitude — even when God clearly blesses us? Consider: familiarity, comparison, affluence, unspoken expectations, busyness.

Jesus praises the unlikely Samaritan who comes back. Why do you think gratitude often shows up most clearly in the “unlikely,” the overlooked, or those in deep need? What might that teach you about the condition of your own heart?

The Samaritan’s faith and gratitude brought him not just healing, but wholeness (“your faith has made you well”). How might gratitude actually change things in your relationships, your happiness, or your walk with Jesus?

Application

Hebrews 12:28 says we please God by serving Him with thankful hearts. Where in your life are you more prone to grumbling, anxiety, or entitlement instead of gratitude?

What would it look like to “serve God with a thankful heart” in those exact places this week?

If gratitude unexpressed is not gratitude, who is one person you need to intentionally thank this week — and why? What would it do to your heart to actually follow through?
